From little things, big things grow...
SAFE Perth (Saving Perth Animals From Euthanasia Inc) commenced in Perth approximately 2005, with three members. The dedication and hard work of our members has grown the organisation and ensured that cats, dogs and other animals in Perth are saved from euthanasia each week.
SAFE Perth Inc operates through a network of animal foster carers and other volunteers who assist in a variety of tasks. The work undertaken by SAFE Perth Inc is vital and can only continue with the ongoing support of our volunteers, the wider community and sponsors.
SAFE Perth (Saving Perth Animals from Euthanasia Inc) now has a large and dedicated team of foster carers and volunteers covering the Perth metro area and into regional W.A, saving hundreds of lives every year. SAFE Perth rescue animals due for euthanasia at pounds and vets and take in unwanted and abandoned animals as far south as Albany, up to Broome in the north and York and Northam in the east. This includes flying animals in from remote communities. Rescued pets are then placed with volunteer carers to live in their own homes where they are cared for as part of the family. Whilst in foster care animals are assessed, vet work completed and basic training is commenced.
All SAFE Perth fosters are vet checked, sterilised, vaccinated, microchipped, flea treated and wormed before leaving to live out the rest of their lives in loving homes that have been screened for suitability.
In Western Australia the law requires the animal serves a minimum impounding time of 72 hours if not microchipped, after which councils may dispose of the animal either through sale to the general public, offering to rescue groups or euthanasia which at some pounds is carried out by shooting.
We do not have kennels or a cattery, instead our dynamic and dedicated group of foster carers are able to achieve the greatest of acts – the saving of a life.
It is the goal of SAFE Perth to promote responsible pet ownership and to reinforce the value of companion animals to modern families. SAFE Perth receives no corporate or government funding and relies on the help of the public to continue the work of saving animals from early and unnecessary death.
SAFE Perth is proactive in helping to bring about positive change in the areas which cause so many unwanted and abandoned companion animals. We strongly support and promote de-sexing of all domestic pets. Whenever SAFE Perth take in surrendered litters of puppies or kittens we provide free desexing of the mother of that litter through one of our nominated vets. SAFE Perths primary goal is to stop healthy and rehomable companion animals from being euthanised.
